Contested Ended! Read on…
I’ve been wanting to start a series about my favorite things for a looooong time, and since I only have 7 kids at my house right now, I decided TODAY is the day! (I really do have 7 kids at my house but they are practically babysitting each other. And you know how all of a sudden your kids find their own toys and house SO interesting and fun when somebody else is there?? THAT.)
Onward.
I met Sophie Hudson on The Twitter, where I meet so many of my favorite people. I felt strongly that Sophie was “My People”, so when I realized that she was going to be signing her book, A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet, at Lemuria, in Jackson, MS, on a day that I, TOO was going to be in Jackson, MS, well… I got vurry excited. I got her book, hugged her neck then promptly read almost half of the book on the two-hour drive back to Greenwood. (Zeb was driving. CALM yourself.)
*I read the whole book in less than 24 hours. (I almost cried when people said this to me about my book and wanted to know when the next one would come out. Because as I continued to point out to folks, it’d be like ask a Momma laying on the delivery table, nursing her brand new baby, “When you gonna have another one??”)
So I’m sorry, Sophie. But WRITE FAST, mm’kay?
It’s a big deal that I read it this quickly because lately, I’ve become someone I hardly recognize in the book reading department. I’ve ALWAYS been a one book at a time kind of girl, but currently I am reading about 7 books at the same time. It is driving me nuts and I don’t know how to make it stop. I want it to stop. But I don’t know how!! (“I don’t know how!” Martha would say. You’ll get that after you read the book.) So, the fact that I didn’t get distracted by something shiny while reading her book was sort of a breakthrough for me in the book reading business.
I loved the book. Loved it. If you like good Southern story telling, grew up in the South and/or love bacon and/or Jesus, this book is for you. As I told Sophie, “It made me laugh, it made me cry. It made me sure that Jesus has been hearing my prayers lately. It made me sure that I’m still hearing Him. It made me crave catfish so badly that my husband psychically picked up on it.”
Sophie writes a story about eating a a fish camp with her family and y’all– I could practically smell hushpuppies in the car. Zeb, as I said, was driving and had NO idea what I was reading and said out of the blue, while my mouth was watering, “Catfish sure would be good for supper.”
He is The One.
Do you hear me? We were meant to be.
So there you go. My very first Favorite Things post! YAY!
While you are at it, you can follow Sophie on The Twitter, Facebook or read her blog, Boo Mama, right here.
*It should be noted that I read at the speed of light.
