Last week I didn’t think I was ever going to get any details from Aubrey about 1st grade. I realized quickly that the more I asked her about school, the quieter she became, so I finally shut my trap and waited for her volunteer information. (It liked to have KILT me.)
Around bedtime she finally started blabbing and I listened intently as she told me about her new classroom and teacher. When she finally ran out of things to talk about I asked her, “So what is the biggest difference between kindergarten and 1st grade?”
She didn’t hesitate, “The chairs are attached to the desks.”
I laughed. I guess it’s pretty obvious, now instead of sitting in a chair at a table, she is in a Real Desk.
Tonight was Parent Orientation at Aubrey’s school. She came home after school and told me if I picked out her self-portait at school she would get a free night with no homework.
“MOMMA! This is really important. I have a flower in my hair, and a green shirt just like this one,” she pointed to her chest. “We HAVE to win, Momma!”
Aubrey’s self-portraits are pretty easy to spot. There was the tell-tale flower, green shirt, freckles, and my favorite touch, the combination of brown and yellow crayons to try to capture the exact shade of her strawberry blonde hair.
When I was putting Aubrey to bed I said, “I picked out your picture and I sat in your desk tonight.”
She cackled. “Did you have to suck it in to get in there?”
“NO!”
She could barely breathe. “Did you get STUCK?!”
“NO!”
She was still laughing when I turned off the light and walked out of her room.
What do your kids have to say about school?
