After a long day of swimming and playing everyone was fast asleep in the hotel room except for Aubrey (4), my mother and myself. I had on my nightgown and Aubrey commented that I had “big, big boobies.” Nothing like stating the obvious.
Me: Do you have big boobies?
Aubrey: No, I have little tiny ones.
Me: How about Shuggie, does she have big ones or tiny ones?
Aubrey: She has big boobies…and old ones.
Aubrey Said: Minty Mouse
I let the girls pick out a prize on our last day at Disney. Aubrey picked out a stuffed Minnie Mouse dressed like a princess. We were riding the bus back to the hotel, Aubrey was clutching her new toy and looked up at me and said, “Momma, why you get me this Minty Mouse?”
Me: Because I love you and this was a special treat for you.
Aubrey: That makes me purr at you!! Purrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Aubrey Said: Heaven
I have a Tiffany Lamp that was given to me by a dear friend who has since passed away. It’s been in the closet for a long time because I was worried one of my children would break it and I would have to call DHR for preventative measures. It’s beautiful, the shade is made of glass in shades of pink, green and white. Once Sadie was born I just had to get it out. It made me happy to think about my friend when I saw it. And I knew it would make my friend happy to know her lamp was beside my baby’s bed.
(Don’t get nervous, it’s not broken-Blair.) I had childproofed the door to Baby Sadie’s room, after catching Emma in the bed with her tiny infant sister. So I felt safe having the lamp in the nursery. The big girls rarely go in there, now that the door is childproofed.
This afternoon, while cleaning the house, I caught Aubrey(4) standing on a chair (a rocking chair, at that) to turn on my lamp. I explained to her the importance of the lamp and told her, “One of my very good friends gave that to me and it makes me really happy to look at it. My friend is in heaven now, and if you break it Mommy would cry and cry.”
Aubrey said, “Is there a store in Keben?” (She calls it Keben, I have no explanation for this…)
I said, “No, Aubrey-er, I mean I don’t know. There might be but I can’t get another one.”
Aubrey asked, “What would make you stop crying Momma? If I go to Keben and get you anudder one?”
I sighed, the way mother’s do and said, “Just don’t touch the lamp. OK, Aubrey?”
Aubrey Said: Extra Hands
This morning my mom was feeding Sadie (4 months) a bottle, and holding Emma (2 yrs) in her lap while she talked on the phone to my sister (*27 and holding). Aubrey (4) walked up to her and asked my mom to get something for her. My mom looked at Aubrey and said, exasperated, “I’ve only got two hands, Aubrey!” Aubrey said, “Oh, you’re not an octopus?”
*I would like to publicly apologize to my sister for rounding up. As a woman I should have known better, you always round DOWN when dealing with matters of weight and age. Sorry.
Aubrey Said: Beer
This morning Aubrey was snuggling in the bed with her Shuggie while I slept soundly. (Hallelujah!)
They were looking through ads which had been sent to the house and Aubrey was quizzing my mother about what each ad said and picking out the letters she recognized.
There was an ad for teeth whitening, Aubrey asked Shuggie, “What does that say?”
“Brush your teeth twice a day,” Shuggie told her.
Aubrey flipped the ad over and saw another ad, this one for some sort of beer. It had a party scene on it and everyone had a bottle in their hands. “Does that make your teeth whiter, Shuggie?” “No,” my mother answered her, “it doesn’t.”
Aubrey immediately said, “Does it make you dance?” Dumbfounded my mother said she guessed it did. It’s a good thing she didn’t ask me, I would have told her it’ll make you howl at the moon if you drink too much of it!
Aubrey Said: What I Learned in Church
We were leaving church today and I asked Aubrey (4) what she learned in her class…
Aubrey: How to be a muddy, muddy Christian….
Me: You mean a MIGHTY, MIGHTY Christian?
Aubrey: NO! A MUDDY, MUDDY CHRISTIAN!
Me: What is a Muddy Christian?
Aubrey: Somebody who doesn’t take a bath.
She’s been singing, “I am a Christian! A muddy, muddy Christian!” all day.
Aubrey Said: Bees
A few weeks ago Aubrey (4) was dipping her chicken fingers in honey and she asked me where the honey came from…
Me: The bees made it just for you.
Aubrey: But how did they get it in that bottle?
Today at the Strawberry Festival there was a bee-keeper. He had a hive or whatever you call it, in glass so the kids could see the bees working away. Aubrey was enthralled. I had tried during our previous dinner time conversation to explain how the bees made honey, and now she was getting to see it first hand. She watched in amazement and said, “WOW, they sure are busy Momma!”
