Being an artist is HARD, your success is often judged by how many people are willing to say LOUDLY that they like what you do. And you want to know what feels scuzzy, like seriously gross? Being an artist, pouring your heart and soul into your craft and then asking people, “Hey, if you like me, will you tell your friends?”
Because art isn’t something you do to please other people. You do it because it has to come out of you or you will implode. You do it because you can’t NOT do it and you pray that other people will nod their heads in recognition and say, “YES!! That thing!! YES!! ME too!”
To make money being an artist, you gots to do a lot of self-promotion which can feel kind of sleazy– especially considering that so many artists are already extreme introverts. I do self-promotion for myself because it’s part of the job description. BUT I promote my artist friends because I believe in what they’re doing and I want to LOUDLY and publicly support them.
If you follow me on Facebook (and why wouldn’t you?) I’ve made my feelings about Ryan Kinder AND The RKB perfectly clear– but JUST IN CASE– those dudes are some of my favorite humans on the planet and they are CRAZY talented and I want them to succeed. Not just because one day I can go hang out in their Nashville mansions (because DUR that’s totally happening) but because they are artists and I simply think the more great writing, great photography, breathtaking paintings and music that touches your soul that’s out there– the better off we’ll all be.
They literally ROCK and I think you would love them, otherwise I’d be catching up on Scandal right now and not writing a blog post. Ya feel me??
So here’s the deal. The Ryan Kinder Band’s second single, Kiss Me When I’m Down, has just been released on iTunes and it’s so good. After it was released it got played on The Highway on Sirius FM several times but I listened ALL DAY LONG today in the car and I never heard it. I’m not okay with this. I wrote on The Highway’s FB wall, but I think they just need a lil nudge in the Ryan Kinder direction.
So if you love me, or art or music, or how RyRy stares soulfully into the camera like he’s the next Ryan Gosling…
Buy his song on iTunes and let the folks over on The Highway know we want more Ryan Kinder!
And for the LOVE of all artists everywhere, if you like a book, a painting, a song or a photograph– the best thing you can do is to be loud about it! Leave reviews, share with friends, post on FB and to other social media accounts. All artists have one thing in common– we need YOU!!

The most important thing about hanging at the mansion is we can hang out!!
Thanks so much for this!!!

I love this post. Seriously. One of my professors in art school told us one day, “Making art is the easy part, getting people to buy it that’s what’s hard.” Truer words were never spoken.
